Pick the Right WordPress Hosting

April 15, 2014 by Rob Farber Leave a Comment

Updated July 2, 2016 (thanks to Paul Warren of Insiteful)

WordPress is a free and open-source blogging tool and Content Management System (CMS). It was released on May 2003. According to Wikipedia, WordPress now powers more than 26.4% of the top 10 million websites as of April 2016. This represents significant growth as Wikipedia previously noted WordPress was used by 18.9% of the top 10 million websites as of August 2013.

The first step is to pick a good name that will associate the content of your blog and the message(s) that will raise an audience. This is the reason why we chose TechEnablement.com because “Enablement” is a noun that means:

  1. The act of providing someone with adequate power, means, opportunity, or authority to do something
  2. The act of making something possible

Next you need a good hosting service that can deliver your context 24/7. The initial version of the TechEnablement.com website is hosted on A2hosting.com. The price/performance appears to be there, We used 2014 articles by Andy Forsberg to make our initial hosting decision. Andy’s latest information can be found in his article”Best WordPress Hosting in 2016“.

We found that using the Turbo Server plan greatly accelerated our site with PHP compilation, nginx, and SSD storage for our databases.

Paul Warren also wrote a review about WP Engine, another WordPress hosting site that receives high accolades. You can check out his article, “WP Engine Review“.

There are also many website speed testing tools such as https://tools.pingdom.com/ and https://gtmetrix.com/. I found the timeline or waterfall plots to be particularly useful.

BTW: Paul appears to be staying on top of the hosting sites as he contacted us at TechEnablement and provided much of the updated information used in this article. Thanks Paul!
