Farewell to a Familiar HPC Friend

May 27, 2020 by Rob Farber Leave a Comment

Rich Brueckner was a friend and colleague who will be missed by the HPC community – myself included. He is a fallen comrade to those in media. Sadly we must now use the past tense and say he was a recognized and influential voice to his audience. Very simply, Rich raised the bar in reporting and life.

His passing on May 18, 2020 means that we will no longer have the pleasure of stopping by to chat with Rich at various trade shows. Rich had a knack of finding the centrally located table upon which to perch his MacBook so the world could come to him.

With his raspy voice, red hat, and overall appearance, it is difficult to conceive of a character who more resembled the persona of a hard-bitten, world-wise newspaper man transplanted into the world of electronic media. Yet Rich’s humor and insight showed a man of character, a friend worth keeping, and a person who would sometimes take surprising actions that showed deep depths of caring and kindness.

Rich was proud of his short documentary “Once there was a Giant“, which he produced as a self-titled tech journalist & story teller. The film premiered on Oct. 31, 2018 at a fundraising event in Portland, Oregon. He will be missed.
