Google Maps Adds Virtual Reality

December 18, 2014 by Rob Farber Leave a Comment

Google has added virtual reality to Google Maps with the use of their cardboard smartphone app and holder. Total cost for those who have an android is either free (build a cardboard holder from the google plans) or up to $25 USD for a dodo cardboard case.

The Google Play store currently offers roughly 20 Cardboard-based apps. Games include “Caaaaardboard!” where the player jumps from the roof of a skyscraper and collects different values on the way down for high scores before landing safely on the ground. Others like “The Hobbit VR Experience” which gives fans a virtual reality 360-degree view of the Shire.

To increase the number of apps, Google is now providing a cardboard Android and Unity SDK for developers.
