MSI Laptops for Live Event Production And Virtual Reality Development

March 27, 2015 by Rob Farber Leave a Comment

TechEnablement spoke with Clifford Chun and Mark Lee from MSI about the 4k display refresh of the WS60 MSI thin-and-light mobile workstation with the latest WS60 2OJ 4K edition. In particular, Chun (the North America Region Product Manager for Notebooks and Tablets) noted that “many people are using these products for virtual reality.” The 4k display is a boon for customers making and editing commercials, as they can easily carry one of these 4 pound (1.9 Kg) laptops and to add real-time backgrounds and other special effects with VmixHD. For example, the vMix Thunder bundle from vMix.com includes an AJA Io® 4K device that plugs into Thunderbolt interface on the WS60.

We have been performing a long-term review of the MSI WS60 thin-and-light mobile workstation and found it to be an awesome, portable workstation.

Those who need more Quadro power in heavier package might look to the WT72 17.3 inch mobile workstation. GPU options include a  Quadro K2200M (2 GB VRAM), K3100M or K4100M (both 4 GB VRAM). These graphics cards are well suited for professional tasks such as 3D modeling.

Mark Lee (Business Development Manager for Mobile Workstations) noted that some customers, “need GTX game cards to pump up the frame rate for development”. After seeing the massive performance MSI Titan laoptops, one customer at GDC  purchased twenty-three (23) laptops on the spot for development purposes.

Expect MSI to have a much larger presence at future trade shows given their increasing momentum and presence in the market.
