Oculus has unveiled a much lighter and ergonomic prototype virtual reality headset nicknamed Crescent Bay. This headset is not available to consumers. The hew headset features a higher resolution and refresh rate, 360-degree head tracking and integrated headphones.”It’s as big of a leap as we made from DK1 to DK2,” says Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe, referring to the first two versions of the Rift development kit. Oculus recently teamed up with Samsung to introduce Gear VR, a $200 headset with a slot for using the Galaxy Note 4 smartphone as a VR display. For continually updated information about VR headsets see “Compare Augmented Reality Displays from NVIDIA, Oculus Rift, Meta, and Others (updated)“.
Even with the lighter headset, Oculus still doesn’t think it’s ready to get consumers to walk around or even stand up in VR. The Rift products are being pitched as a “seated experience,” something CEO Brendan Iribe has been consistently stressing. As can be seen in the following video of a seated security guard falling out of his seat, the challenges with people running into things are very real.
